What are dental implants?

A dental implant is the closest substitute for a missing tooth. It can fill a gap for cosmetic reasons or to prevent future problems with adjacent teeth. A small screw is fixed to the jawbone, before a bespoke crown is fitted to the top. The treatment is usually straightforward and results in a functioning bite and a confident, natural-looking smile.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants work by inserting a small titanium screw that fuses with your jawbone to mimic your natural root structure. When the implant site has healed, a crown, bridge or denture can be attached to the top of the screw, to restore the appearance of a natural, healthy tooth.

Dental implants can:

  • replace single or multiple missing teeth

  • prevent nearby teeth from shifting into a gap

  • help maintain jawbone density

  • stabilise loose or new dentures [2]

Dental implant treatment process

Preparation

Your dentist will take 3D scans of your mouth and jaw, to create a precise and detailed map of where to place your implant.

Implant surgery

Your implant will be fitted dental anaesthetic. A small titanium screw is inserted into your jaw where it fuses with the natural bone to mimic the root. A temporary cap will be fitted on top of the screw, until your permanent crown is ready.

Custom-made crown

While your implant site heals, your new tooth will be created in a lab by dental technicians. They’ll use the scans to ensure it’s the perfect fit, blending seamlessly with the individual shape and shade of your natural teeth.

Final fitting

After eight to 12 weeks of healing, you should be ready for your new tooth to be fitted. Afterwards, you may be asked to attend follow-up appointments to ensure everything is going smoothly. [2]

Is a dental implant right for me?

  • If you have a missing tool or a large gap you want to fill between teeth, dental implants provide the foundation for a custom crown 

  • Implant treatments may be provided by the NHS under specific circumstances, for example if you’ve experienced facial or dental damage[3]

Dental implant treatment options

We offer a range of implant treatments to suit every smile.

Single dental implant

A single dental implant is the closest replacement for a missing tooth, bringing back your smile and helping nearby teeth stay problem-free. A titanium screw mimics the structure of your natural tooth root and allows a single crown to be fitted on top, that looks and feels just like a real tooth.

Multiple dental implants

If you have two or more teeth missing, you might benefit from multiple dental implants. They can be fitted either as individual crowns or, if they’re together, a short bridge, so you may not need an implant for each missing tooth.

Implant-retained dentures

An implant-retained denture, or overdenture, is a removable fitting that attaches firmly to your implant screws, a bit like press studs. It’s a more stable and comfortable alternative if your regular dentures feel loose or awkward when talking and eating.

Same-day dental implants

Sometimes referred to as ‘All on 4’ or ‘All on 6’, these full arch replacements require either four or six implant screws to support a complete set of new teeth. You’ll leave with a lightweight acrylic bridge, with your permanent replacements fitted a few months later when the implant sites have properly healed.

Aftercare for dental implants

Your dentist will give you all the advice you need to care for your implant and manage the healing process comfortably at home.

You might experience some swelling, soreness, bleeding or bruising in the days following a dental implant procedure, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication and subsides after a few days.

To help with dental implant healing, it’s best not to brush the affected area for a week. You should also avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. [4] You might find it easier to stick to soft foods initially and start eating what you want when you feel comfortable. [4] 

Brushing and flossing regularly in between your routine appointments will help to prevent any gum disease or inflammation developing around your implant and prolong its natural life.

Dental implants are a long-lasting solution to missing teeth. It might help to think of them as a permanent root, with a replaceable tooth on top.

While the titanium screw should never need changing due to age, your crown will be subject to natural wear and tear. Even then, it will typically last between 10 and 15 years before a new one is required. This often makes them a more cost effective alternative to conventional crowns, bridges and dentures which typically don’t offer the same long-term benefits.

Your implant will be fitted under a dental anaesthetic, so you may feel some pressure, but not pain. If you feel nervous about seeing a dentist, you might benefit from conscious sedation, which leaves you awake, but with very little awareness or memory of the treatment. Your clinician will also give you advice on what you can do to aid the healing process and enjoy a smooth recovery.

It will take some time for the implant to fuse naturally with your jawbone and then for the site to heal. This can vary, but typically you’ll be ready for the final fitting of your crown after 8-12 weeks. 

The dental implant is made from biocompatible titanium, designed to interact with your jawbone in the same way a natural root would. The crown will be either porcelain or zirconia. These are durable materials that replicate the look and feel of a normal tooth. 

Dental implants aren’t the answer for everyone – for example, the density of your jawbone may make the procedure unsuitable. In that case, your dentist will discuss some other options with you, such as pterygoid and zygomatic implants.

Pterygoid implants anchor behind the upper molars for enhanced support without the need for bone grafting. Zygomatic implants are set into the cheekbone. 

Both techniques allow for same-day fixed teeth to be fitted and are performed exclusively by specialist clinicians. They’re ideally suited for complex cases, failed grafts or where limited bone is present. A consultant can advise on whether pterygoid or zygomatic implants might work for you. 

You’ll need to stop smoking or vaping before you’re considered for an implant. Nicotine impairs the healthy flow of blood to the gums and may contribute to a dental implant failing if you start smoking again after the procedure.
