The veneer treatment process

Initial consultation

This is your chance to discuss with your dentist why you want veneers, what you hope to achieve and agree a treatment plan between you.

Veneers created

From a 3D scan or impression, your custom-made veneers will be created in a dental lab by expert technicians and sent back to your dentist.

Fitting

At your fitting appointment, your dentist will check the shape and colour of your veneers. The surface of your teeth will be prepared and the individual veneers bonded to them using a dental adhesive.

Aftercare and advice

After the fitting, you’ll receive important advice about caring for your veneers and maintaining their appearance in the years ahead.

Other veneer treatments

No-prep veneers

No-prep veneers are a less invasive option and may suit you if your teeth are already in good alignment. They need less enamel to be removed before they’re applied.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers are the least invasive option and work well for covering small chips or discolouration. Your dentist applies composite resin that matches the colour of your other teeth, building up the layers until you’re happy with the result.

Aftercare for veneers

Aftercare for veneers is usually minimal. You can carry on with normal activities soon after your appointment, once the effects of any anaesthetic have worn off.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste to look after your veneers. It’s also best to avoid whitening products, as these can scratch the surface.

It’s best to be cautious with hard and crunchy food like apples, nuts and raw carrot. If you do chip a veneer, it is usually straightforward to replace.

Like natural enamel, veneers can become discoloured over time. Porcelain is highly resistant to staining, but it helps to limit red wine, tea, coffee, berries and curries.

Veneers are usually made from porcelain which is both hard-wearing and long-lasting. With proper care, you can expect them to last between 10 and 20 years. If you chip or damage a veneer, it can be replaced with a straightforward appointment.

Your teeth continue to function as normal under your veneers. Your dentist may need to remove a small amount of enamel, but this won’t harm the tooth. With less enamel, though, you may notice some sensitivity to hot and cold food.
