What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a custom-made clear aligner system designed to straighten your teeth.1 Smooth and virtually invisible, each aligner fits snugly around your teeth and applies gentle pressure, gradually moving them into the desired position. There are no metal wires or brackets, and unlike fixed braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed before eating and brushing.

How does Invisalign® treatment work?

Initial consultation

Before starting treatment, you’ll attend an Invisalign consultation with your dentist, where you’ll see a picture of how your smile could look after treatment. If you decide to go ahead, detailed scans of your mouth will be taken and used to make your bespoke Invisalign aligners in a specialist lab.

Fitting

When your aligners are ready, you’ll return to the practice for a fitting. Your dentist will give you your first set of aligners to wear day and night.

New aligners

As your teeth move, you’ll usually need new Invisalign aligners every 12 to 15 weeks. In many cases, you can switch them over at home or you might need to see your dentist first.

Switch to a retainer

Once Invisalign® treatment is complete, your dentist will likely recommend wearing a retainer to keep your teeth in position. They’ll advise you on how often and how long to wear it.

The problems Invisalign® treatment can solve

Crooked or overcrowded teeth

If there isn’t enough space in your jaw, your teeth can start to overlap or twist out of alignment. This can cause problems with cleaning and flossing, potentially increasing the risk of plaque and gum disease, and compromising the comfort and effectiveness of your bite.

Gaps in teeth

Gaps are usually a cosmetic issue but they can also affect the way you talk and bite, as well as making it harder to keep your teeth clean. Invisalign aligners can create movement horizontally or vertically and even rotate teeth to close gaps if required.

Some wider gaps can’t be resolved by Invisalign treatment and your dentist will advise you on the best way forward.

Bite issues

An uneven or misaligned bite can cause pain and discomfort, excessive tooth wear, headaches and problems with speech. Invisalign aligners can correct a range of bite issues, including:

> Overbites – by pushing back protruding upper teeth

> Underbites – by bringing upper teeth forward and lower teeth backward

> Crossbites – by correcting upper teeth sitting inside lower teeth

> Open bites – by ensuring your upper and lower teeth meet properly

Aftercare for Invisalign® treatment

Knowing how to care for your Invisalign® aligners throughout treatment helps protect your results and keeps things on track.

Caring for your aligners

Always remove your Invisalign® aligners before eating or brushing.[2] Clean them regularly with warm water and soap or toothpaste to keep them fresh.[2]

After treatment, your dentist will likely recommend a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position. They’ll advise how often and how long to wear it.

Easing discomfort

Invisalign® treatment isn’t painful, but you may notice a dull ache as your teeth start to move. This usually responds well to over-the-counter pain relief and subsides after a few days.

You should view Invisalign treatment as a long-term investment in your appearance and dental health. The cost varies depending on the provider and your specific needs, but most patients pay between £1,500 and £5,000 for Invisalign treatment in the UK. Successful outcomes are built on the latest digital imaging technology. These detailed scans of your mouth determine the precise moulding of your custom-made aligners, which are supplied to you in a sequence to wear over time. Costs also include the dental visits you’ll need and the retainers that prevent your teeth from moving back out of alignment.

There’s no sharp pain involved in fitting or wearing the Invisalign® aligners. You may feel a dull ache initially as your teeth begin to move, but for most people this settles within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

The placement of your aligners can alter the way your tongue moves when you talk. For some people, this can cause minor lisping or whistling over certain word sounds. But as you get used to your Invisalign® aligners, your speech should return to normal within a few days or weeks.

There’s no fixed timeline for wearing Invisalign® aligners. It depends on the complexity of your case and how your teeth respond to treatment. As a guide, most patients wear them for around 18 to 24 months before switching to retainers that prevent their teeth from shifting back out of position.

In some cases, tiny Invisalign® buttons are temporarily glued to your teeth to give your aligner something to push against. They’re made from a composite material and barely noticeable while worn.

If movement is needed in your jaw, usually to correct an issue with your bite, you may be given small elastic bands along with your Invisalign® aligners. Also virtually invisible, these bands hook over the buttons and encourage your upper and lower teeth to move into better alignment. Even in combination, clear aligners, buttons and bands remain far less intrusive than traditional fixed braces.

Yes. Being removable is one of the advantages of the Invisalign® system over fixed braces. You should take them out for eating, brushing and sport, and make sure to clean both your teeth and your aligners after meals to prevent food from getting trapped.

This varies by patient, but as a guide, you’ll have an initial consultation, followed by a fitting a few weeks later, then new Invisalign® aligners every 12 to 15 weeks as your teeth move. In some cases, aligners can be changed over at home without needing to see your dentist.

Traditional braces use metal brackets bonded to each tooth and linked with wires.[2] Invisalign® aligners are smooth, transparent trays that fit over your teeth with no metal parts.[2] Braces are quite noticeable whereas aligners are virtually invisible2 and, unlike fixed braces, can be removed.[1]
