Hygiene Treatment

Gum Disease Treatment

Whether you require treatment for gum recession, gum disease pain relief or something similar, our tailored solutions for periodontics will improve your oral health.

Our gum infection treatments are customised to meet your specific needs. We aim to start with the least invasive approach which involves decontamination. This involves professional cleaning under the deep periodontal pockets and thorough cleaning of the root surfaces. In more advanced cases, we’ll use a range of minor surgical procedures to re-establish your periodontal health. This involves smoothing and correcting defects and irregularities in the bone and soft tissue surrounding the diseased teeth.

Our dentists and hygienists work together closely to educate patients on how to prevent gum disease. Good oral health has a proven link to overall health which means if you look after your gums, you could mitigate against other conditions like heart disease and cancer.

Gum disease treatment FAQs

Explore answers to the most common questions about gum disease treatment.

It’s the clinical term for advanced gum disease. It means ‘inflammation of the supporting structures that hold the tooth in the jaw.’ It’s usually caused by poor dental hygiene and is a serious infection. Plaque builds up and eventually damages the gums. If left untreated, it can destroy the jawbone as well. In very bad cases, it can lead to tooth removal.

Periodontal disease is the more serious form of gingivitis. However, gingivitis can be reversed with daily brushing and flossing. Gum infection treatment on the other hand, can usually only treat periodontitis and keep it under control. Having a consultation with our periodontist will help decide which treatment option is suitable for you.

Bacteria in the gums causes periodontal disease. Because of this, there’s a risk that the infection could be carried via salvia. Kissing and close contact with shared food and utensils etc. could potentially transmit the disease. However, the main cause of periodontal disease is poor dental hygiene.

Swollen, red and tender gums, toothache, bad breath, or loose teeth are all symptoms of periodontitis. You may have few or no symptoms, so a dentist can examine and diagnose this for you. It’s important that you attend regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments so gum disease can be detected if it’s there. If you don’t do this, gum disease can remain unfound for decades. Going to the dentist to treat inflamed gums can relieve some of these symptoms.
